When your pocket can\u2019t keep up with your huge appetite for books, you should probably look for new ways to get titles without spending. In that case, why not borrow ebooks instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have a clue how to borrow ebooks, you may be in luck! Today, we\u2019ll teach you everything you need to know about borrowing electronic books for free right after the jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borrow ebooks from Windows or Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Borrow ebooks from your local library and read them on your Windows or Mac. Before you do so, however, you\u2019ll need to download Adobe Digital Editions<\/em> (ADE) on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Install the free Adobe Digital Editions<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Open OverDrive<\/em> on a Web browser. Sign up for a new account to begin borrowing an ebook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Search for the public library in your locale. That way, you may be issued a library card that\u2019s necessary for borrowing ebooks. This is the same process as borrowing a paperback in an actual library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. After you successfully borrow an ebook, it will appear on your Bookshelf<\/em><\/strong>, which is under the Account<\/strong> section on your local library\u2019s OverDrive page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Use the download drop-down menu on the Bookshelf<\/em><\/strong> to select the format of which you\u2019ll read the ebook. Select \u201cConfirm<\/strong>\u201d and then \u201cDownload<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. When you\u2019re prompted to authorize your computer, do so with a free Adobe ID. When you don’t have one, you\u2019ll simply be shown a link where you can create one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In most cases, the downloaded ebooks can be opened and read through Adobe Digital Editions<\/em>. You may also use the program to transfer an ebook to your e-reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To transfer, go to Digital Editions<\/em>\u2019 Library View<\/strong> first by clicking on the Library button in the upper left corner. When you get there, drag and drop the ebook of your choice to your electronic reader. The e-reader will appear on the left, right under Devices<\/strong>. After the transfer, you can read the book on your device just like any other electronic book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Borrow ebooks from your tablet, smartphone, or e-Reader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Again, we\u2019ll turn to OverDrive to get this one done. It\u2019s simply easier borrowing books with this free digital service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Install the free OverDrive mobile app from the right app store for your device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Sign-up for a free OverDrive account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Select \u201cSign-up Using a Library Card<\/strong>\u201d under \u201cFind Your Library<\/strong>\u201d. From there, search the nearest public library in your area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. In Collection<\/strong>, you can see available titles. Tap one that you like and select the \u201cBorrow<\/strong>\u201d option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. The ebook you borrow will appear on your Bookshelf<\/em><\/strong> under your account on the library\u2019s OverDrive page. From here, you can download the electronic book or audiobook to the OverDrive app. That, or read them in your browser so there won\u2019t be a need to download!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      You may have noticed that we\u2019ve been recommending the use of OverDrive. That\u2019s because it\u2019s a simple database you can use to search for public libraries that lend ebooks in your area.       Open Library<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The organization\u2019s goal is to create a webpage for every book ever published and they\u2019re doing an amazing job! What\u2019s great about this open library catalog is that anyone can borrow ebooks as long as they register. You can borrow an ebook for 2 weeks, which can be read in PDF or ePub formats.       Prime Reading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      When you\u2019re an Amazon Prime member in the US, the best way to read ebooks is the Prime Reading service. The service gives you access to a rotating library of over a thousands books for free. Books aren\u2019t the only stuff you can read through Amazon\u2019s newest perk, though. You also get to read a changing selection of comics and magazines like People, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated. And if you don\u2019t have a Kindle, don\u2019t worry. You can still read ebooks on any iOS and Android devices using the free Kindle app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      SimplyE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Are you a resident of New York? In that case, the New York Public Library\u2019s newest app may be your best option to borrow ebooks with ease. With SimplyE<\/a> app, you can browse, borrow, and read around 300,000 e-books on your Android smartphone or iPhone\/iPad. You\u2019ll need a New York Public Library card to use SimplyE, though. You can either apply for it in person, renew at an NYPL location near you, or apply by mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
