Why you ask? As it turns out, many of these popular routers are susceptible to \u201ctrivial\u201d cyber attacks. Simply open a malware-infested website and your home Wi-Fi network could easily be hijacked by one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellotech.com\/locky\/\">nasty ransomware<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellotech.com\/popcorn-time-ransomware\/\">two<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The routers are shockingly so defenseless that US-CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) from the Department of Homeland Security posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kb.cert.org\/vuls\/id\/582384\">vulnerability advisory<\/a> for it. At the moment, NETGEAR has been releasing new firmware to fix the issue. Upon closer inspection, however, it\u2019s clear that the company still has a lot of ground to cover at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-netgear-routers-are-vulnerable\">Which NETGEAR Routers are Vulnerable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, US-CERT advised that routers R6400 (NETGEAR\u00aeAC1750-Smart WiFi Router) and R7000 (NETGEAR\u00ae AC1900-Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router) were deemed vulnerable. Later on, they included the model R8000 (NETGEAR\u00ae AC3200-Nighthawk AC3200 Tri-Band WiFi Router) in their advisory. Sadly, the list didn\u2019t just end with the three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As security experts investigated the routers, they discovered that the security flaw was present in several other models. Here is the most complete list of <em>possibly<\/em> affected NETGEAR routers we\u2019ve seen so far:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC1600 Smart WiFi Router (Model R6250)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC1750-Smart WiFi Router (Model R6400)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae Nighthawk AC1750 Smart WiFi Router (Model R6700)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC1900-Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router (Model R7000)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC2300-Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router with MU-MIMO (Model R7000P)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae Nighthawk AC1900 Modem Router (Model R7100LG)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae Nighthawk DST 1900 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router (Model R7300)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC2350-Nighthawk X4 AC 2350 Dual Band WiFi Router (Model R7500)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC2600-Nighthawk X4S Smart WiFi Gaming Router (Model R7800)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae Nighthawk AC3000 X6 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router (Model R7900)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC3200-Nighthawk AC3200 Tri-Band WiFi Router (Model R8000)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AC5300-AC5300 Nighthawk X8 Tri-Band WiFi Router (Model R8500)<\/li><li>NETGEAR\u00ae AD7200-Nighthawk X10 Smart WiFi Router (Model R9000)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s feared that the vulnerability could be more widespread than initially anticipated since many NETGEAR\u00ae routers run on the same firmware. You may have to run a test on your NETGEAR\u00ae router to be sure that it isn\u2019t among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-i-test-if-my-netgear-router-is-susceptible\">How Do I Test if My NETGEAR Router is Susceptible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A simple yet harmless test can be done to see if your current NETGEAR router is susceptible. Just open a web browser while you\u2019re connected to the Internet through your router and type the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>http:\/\/[RouterIP]\/cgi-bin\/;REBOOT<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take note that the \u201c<em>[RouterIP]<\/em>\u201d above should be substituted by your router\u2019s IP address. To know your router\u2019s local IP address, here\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/2474776\/wireless-networking\/network-security-find-the-ip-address-of-your-home-router.html\">helpful guide<\/a>. Or you could try this simpler command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>http:\/\/www.routerlogin.net\/cgi-bin\/;REBOOT<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whichever command you choose, your router SHOULD NOT reboot. If it does, you have to immediately unplug the device because it\u2019s apparently vulnerable to remote infiltration. What comes next may be the most uncomfortable part of the process: waiting for NETGEAR to resolve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-netgear-taking-immediate-action-on-this\">Is NETGEAR Taking Immediate Action on This?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the company is <a href=\"http:\/\/kb.netgear.com\/29960\/NETGEAR-Product-Vulnerability-Advisory-Potential-security-issue-associated-with-remote-management?cid=wmt_netgear_organic\">working on a fix<\/a> as we speak. In fact, they\u2019ve already released a few, new firmware for some router models. Sadly, the company admits that they have known about the security flaw since August, yet they have provided no details on the actions they took since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-i-temporarily-protect-my-netgear-router-from-imminent-attacks\">Can I Temporarily Protect My NETGEAR Router from Imminent Attacks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, you can. It\u2019s an unofficial workaround, but it should disable any attempts at infiltration. What it does is disable the router\u2019s administration web interface completely. Consequently, you won\u2019t be able to open ports or change WiFi passwords for the meantime. On the upside, hackers can\u2019t exploit the only channel that allows them to infiltrate your network in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin, open an Internet browser and just type EITHER of these two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>http:\/\/[RouterIP]\/cgi-bin\/;killall$IFS&#8217;httpd&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>http:\/\/www.routerlogin.net\/cgi-bin\/;killall$IFS&#8217;httpd&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These commands will disable the NETGEAR RouterLogin administrative software, subsequently. Again, this option takes away your administrative powers up until you physically reboot the router. Theoretically speaking, this temporary workaround shouldn\u2019t affect your router\u2019s ability to connect you to the Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may, alternatively, dust off that old router you\u2019ve kept in favor of the more powerful NETGEAR equipment and get them working. We\u2019re hoping, though, that it doesn\u2019t have the label NETGEAR on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t ever think lightly of vulnerabilities, such as those of NETGEAR\u2019s routers. With cyber attacks becoming more frequent, vicious, and cunning, you\u2019ll be wise to err on the side of caution by turning off your router right now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We hope it isn\u2019t a bad time to tell you this, but you may have to shut down your NETGEAR router ASAP.
