Philips Hue Releases New Smart Lights, Adds Spotify Integration
Philips Hue just released a new line of smart light bulbs, strips, and lamps. These new lights are brighter, bigger, and you can sync them to your Spotify playlist to change color along with the beat of any music you’re playing. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Philips Hue smart lights, and how to integrate Spotify with your existing smart lights.
Philips Hue + Spotify Integration
Philips Hue recently partnered with Spotify to release a new feature that turns your smart lights into a music visualizer. Once you sync your Philips Hue smart bulbs to your Spotify account, your lights will flash, change color, brighten, and dim to the beat of your music.
Signify, the company that owns Philips Hue, announced it created a new algorithm to “go far beyond what other integrations can do.” The Hue app can analyze the metadata of any song on Spotify in real-time and match your lights to the music’s mood and tempo during different segments.
While the song is playing, you can also adjust the intensity, brightness, and color of your lights in the Hue app. While using the app, we noticed the difference between settings is quite dramatic, so you will be able to go from party mode to studying by changing just a few settings.
You need a Hue Bridge and at least one Philips Hue color light in order to use this new feature. It will not work with Bluetooth bulbs or white bulbs. However, you don’t need a premium Spotify account, and the free version will work just as well.
How to Sync Your Philips Hue Lights with Spotify
To sync your Philips Hue smart lights with Spotify, open the Philips Hue app and go to Explore. Then tap the Philips Hue + Spotify banner and turn on early access. Next, go to the Sync tab and select Spotify account. Finally, follow the on-screen instructions to sync Spotify to the app.
The app will ask you to sign in to your Hue account and your Spotify account. However, the app was buggy for us, and we needed to delete the Spotify app, sign in to Spotify from the Hue app, and then install the Spotify app again in order to authenticate our account.
Once you have paired your Spotify account to the Hue app, go to Sync and tap the circular Start Sync button when you are playing a song. If you notice your lights are out of sync with your music, tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of your screen and adjust the reaction time until it is in sync.
The Hue-Spotify integration is available for free now, but it will be in early access until September 10, so the new feature might not be available on your device for another few days. Signify says that this option will become a permanent part of the Hue app “after October 2021.”
New Philips Hue Smart Lights
Philips Hue also announced a new lineup of smart lights, including new gradient lights, laps, and strips that can display more than one color at the same time. These bulbs use shades to blend multiple colors seamlessly for a smoother light.
The new Gradient Light Tube was specifically designed to sit under your TV and illuminate the area of your TV where a light strip wouldn’t fit. The company also updated its Ambiance Gradient Lightstrip and designed new Signe floor and table lamps, all of which can be synced to change color with your TV for a more immersive experience.
The tech company also announced brighter options for its standard color-changing bulbs, with new options for 75W and 100W equivalent bulbs. There are also a bunch of new additions to their filament collection, including new ambiance bulbs that can change between thousands of warm-to-cool white shades.
You can now purchase the new filament bulbs along with the gradient table lamp, floor lamp, and light strip from the Philips Hue online store. The Play gradient light tube will become available early next year.
